Foundation Degree Sustainable Communities

Part-time

This course develops your career and can help you make a difference to your local community

This course develops your career and can help you make a difference to your local community

Most people want to live in a place where they know their neighbours and feel safe. A place with good homes, local shops, lots of jobs and opportunities for young people to get a good education.

To create these places we need to change the way we plan, design, build and maintain our housing and communities.

But sustainable communities are about more than bricks and mortar. They need • good governance • public participation • partnership working • excellent public services • civic pride. They are about learning from the mistakes of the past and linking social, economic and environmental planning.

We designed this course to respond to the government’s aim to train people to develop and deliver sustainable communities. We created it in partnership with the Homes and Communities Academy (HCA)  the national centre for delivering the skills and knowledge to create better places.

You study the core areas of • housing • planning • design • environmental management. You also explore multidisciplinary approaches, which helps to break down the barriers between professions.

This course develop the skills you need to have a positive impact on communities, including • partnership working • community consultation • governance • project management.

It is for
• professionals beginning careers in occupations such as housing, transport, planning, environmental management, urban and landscape design, and regeneration
• experienced professionals who want to further their studies and gain a recognised qualification
• people working in the voluntary sector or community activists keen to progress and benefit their local neighbourhoods

Work-based experience and learning are key parts of the course. You gain first hand experience and knowledge of current sustainable community policy and practice.

Students on the course work for a range of community groups and public and private organisations such as
• Homes and Communities Academy
• Sheffield City Council, regeneration and housing team
• Manor and Castle Development Trust
• voluntary action groups

After successfully completing the first half of this course, you gain a Certificate in Higher Education in Sustainable Communities.

This is the first Foundation Degree in Sustainable Communities in the UK. It helps you make a difference to your local community.
